Import Email

You can migrate your existing email history into SipherMail from Gmail, Outlook/Microsoft 365, Yahoo, or any IMAP provider.

Supported import sources

  • Gmail — OAuth import (no password required, secure scope-limited access)
  • Outlook / Microsoft 365 — OAuth import
  • Any IMAP provider — Enter IMAP host, port, username, and app password

How to start an import

  1. Go to Settings → Import & Migration.
  2. Select your source (Gmail, Outlook, or Custom IMAP).
  3. For Gmail/Outlook: you'll be redirected to the provider's OAuth consent screen. Grant the read mail scope only — SipherMail never requests write access to your old mailbox.
  4. For custom IMAP: enter your server details. Use an App Password if your provider supports 2FA (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook all require this).
  5. Select which folders to import (Inbox, Sent, All Mail, or specific labels).
  6. Click Start Import. You'll receive a push notification and email when the import completes.

Import progress

Imports run in the background. You can continue using SipherMail while the import runs. Check Settings → Import & Migration → Import History for progress and any errors. Large mailboxes (10k+ emails) may take 15–30 minutes.

After import

Imported emails appear in a folder matching their original label/folder. They are immediately searchable and available offline (mobile). Attachments are available for preview and download.

Notes & limits

  • Import is a one-time copy — ongoing sync is not available in this version.
  • OAuth refresh tokens are stored encrypted. You can revoke access at any time in Settings → Connected Accounts.
  • Import quota counts against your plan storage.
